Originally built
for flood control and electrical power generation, Bull Shoals and
Norfork lakes have become popular vacation playgrounds. This has made
tourism and recreation an important staple in Ozark County's economy.
Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes are known for their excellent black
bass, crappie, walleye, white bass and white bass/striped bass
hybrids. In addition to fishing, the lakes are ideal for swimming,
pleasure boating, water skiing, tubing, canoeing, sailing, scuba
diving and sun bathing. Canoeing is also a popular year-round sport in
area waterways, although it's most popular from April to October. On a
busy summer weekend, more than 1,000 canoes may be on the North Fork
River.
White-tail deer and turkey provide great sport for those who hunt
Ozark County.
The hope of bagging one or both of these trophy creatures brings
hunters back year after year. The challenge is enhanced by the fact
that Ozark County enjoys one of the best hunting success ratios in the
state. A plentiful habitat keeps deer and turkey populations high.
Mark Twain National Forest, with 38,807 acres, and the Caney Mountain
Conservation Area, with more than 6,500 acres,
are also important habitat resources. The

Conservation Area also hosts a special black powder hunt each
October. Other game species provide bountiful hunting in Ozark
County. Seasons are open for squirrels, rabbits, quail, doves, some
waterfowl, and even frogs!
