Ozark County was in the 1808 Osage Indian land cession.  After that, other tribes roamed the area until it was settled by Southern pioneers in the 1830s. A land of magnificent scenery, Ozark County was officially organized in 1841. Called Decatur from 1843-45, Ozark County is the only county in the United States named for the nation's oldest mountainous region.

The name comes from the French abbreviation Aux Arcs for Aux Arkansas, referring to the Arkansas Indians. Until 1857, a part of Howell and most of Douglas County were included in Ozark County.

Gainesville first held court in 1860 and succeeded old Rockbridge as the county seat when the county was reduced in size. The town was founded on the eve of the Civil War as guerrilla bands later raided the countryside.

Bypassed by the railroad building boom following the Civil War, the county grew somewhat slowly. Its virgin pine forest was lumbered off by the early 1900s, and iron and zinc have been mined here intermittently over the years.
